As I was walking away from the pool yesterday, I saw the cutest elderly couple walking arm and arm. It reminded me that the simplest of actions and moments can be the most profound. I was taken aback for a moment, as I realized that them walking arm and arm was probably something that they'd done together for decades. I had to say something to them, they were really too cute for words. They simply laughed and blushed that I thought they were so adorable.

For me, there was something more in seeing them. There was a beauty in seeing them, in their elderly state. Gone was their youthful sex appeal, and instead there was a radiance that came from a deeper love.

Instantly, I was grateful to see a love that was such a comfort for them. Their initial fire and attraction was replaced with a slow, consistent burn that kept took them through decades of life together. I was thankful to watch them, still "in love," walking arm in arm. I pass my moment along to all of you for Thanksgiving. My wish for all of you is to have love on Thanksgiving.

Death of Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

"Lee Pockriss, who wrote novelty pop hits such as 'Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini' for an eager, youthful post-World War II generation, has died in Connecticut after a long illness. He was 87. His wife, Sonja Pockriss, confirmed his death. She says he died at home in Bridgewater on Monday.

Last year, The New York Times, posted about VPL (visible panty line), a lingerie line that prides itself as inner and outer wear. The store opened with decor embracing your inner ballerina (pictures on this page).

Below is The New York Times post, At VPL, Wispy Clothes for Your Inner Ballerina.

"MOST new Manhattan boutiques tend to be pigeonhole-able into one of two categories. One of two decorative objects will be present, either literally or in spirit, which will harmonize all other aesthetic notes: (1.) stuffed white peacocks; or (2.) vintage leather medicine balls.

The new VPL boutique hurls itself with great gusto and literal vintage medicine balls into the leather medicine-ball category. The shop is chockablock with vintage gymnasia: wooden hand weights, unpainted bowling pins, a leather pommel horse you’d imagine Lucille Ball falling off of, and other cruel fitness paraphernalia from the time before yoga mats.

The lighting casts a yellowy hue; Smokey Robinson and Al Green radiate at a mature volume out of wooden speakers. I don’t know if it was just the first day the heat had kicked on and the radiators were overexcited, or if it was all part of creating an atmosphere of humid athleticism — but it was mighty warm in there.

VPL began as a joke. (It’s an acronym for 'visible panty line.') The designer Victoria Bartlett cut her fashion teeth by deconstructing vintage undergarments. These items (now relegated to the VPL2 line) are weightless little mash-ups, arranged on the racks in gradational colors: paneled tap pants lifted from the 1930s in color triads of cobweb-thin cotton and rayon. The building blocks of early brassieres — elasticized mesh, felted straps — are used to create post-Madonna, neo-girdle tank-tunics ($175). Orange suspender elastics are employed to create a safety bra for young hall monitors in training ($85).

I couldn’t figure out if it was overperforming underwear or underperforming outerwear. A wall of black-and-white photos by Mark Borthwick features decidedly normal-bodied girls leaning against windowsills in these clever underthings. But they are clearly indoors, having a private moment. The VPL print ads show models wearing the same underensembles, only with socks and little platform boots, as if they are about to skip outside and play a Benny Hill-inspired version of Rollerball.

One senses from other racks that Ms. Bartlett is dead-serious about being seen as a respected designer, even without her underpants (snicker). To this end, she has aligned herself with artists she wants in her cultural thought balloon. For instance, the artist Orly Genger, who crochets vast quantities of rope, has created chain-and-rope chokers ($202) and thick wrist-doughnuts that are a cool new take on the paracord survival bracelet. (Good luck untying it to rappel to safety, but you’d probably be able to take out a potential assailant if you threw it hard enough.)...."

Employees Wear Tags with Bra Size

News.com.au posted this story on a lingerie store that wants staff to wear tags with bra size.

"A SWEDISH branch of a Scandinavian lingerie chain has come under fire from some employees for having them wear tags displaying their bust circumference and bra cup size.

The question is whether they're displaying the information willingly and now the Commercial Employees' Union says it may sue the chain Change over the policy, The Local Sweden reports.

'We have dirty old men coming into the shop looking at my cup size. Why should everyone get to know that? Guys selling underwear don't have to show their size,' one anonymous employee earlier told union paper Handelsnytt.

Susann Haglund, CEO of Change, told Handelsnytt in January the tags had been suggested by the employees themselves and were designed to help customers see what size might be right for what body type.

She told Sveriges Radio wearing the tags was completely voluntary and she didn't see how it could be construed as demeaning, The Local said.

But a former employee claimed the tags were mandatory when she started work there and 'you receive a document which states that 'name tag with size is always worn' so to me that doesn't reflect that it was voluntary. It isn't great when you're out on the town and people greet you with your name and cup size'."

Eve's Apples presents a new series of designer interviews. To kick off our exciting interviews with some of your favorite lingerie designers, we're bringing you Nancy Yoo, Owner and Designer of Fleur't, who abides by the simple belief of making "flirty, feminine lingerie that fits and feels good."

Fleur't is one of my favorite brands for the simple fact that once I put on the lingerie, it's so soft and supple that I never want to take it off. In coquettish lace and flirty details, wearing Fleur't lingerie makes me feel utterly divine. Read my interview below with Nancy about her philosophies and inspiration behind Fleur't.

Eve: What was your inspiration to become a designer?

Nancy: I was in graduate school studying for my Ph.D. in literature and though I was in an intellectually stimulating environment and surrounded by amazing people, I felt like I needed more a creative outlet. At that time I had a friend who as a graphics designer who felt the same way. We decided to start a lingerie company together. That didn't last long but I was hooked.

Eve: Who or what is your greatest design influence?

Nancy: I am into the beauty of clean lines and organized but also dreamy and magical spaces, intellectually, spiritually and emotionally. So I get my "feelings" about my designs and designing in general from looking at photographs, art, and especially natural forms that appeal to that sense in me. I also get a lot from stories.

Eve: If your designs made one statement what would they be?

Nancy: Life is dreamy and magical.

Eve: What was your biggest obstacle in starting your business?

Nancy: Lack of financial and business knowledge.

Eve: What is your greatest reward/joy in designing or your business?

Nancy: Feeling like I can express some sense of myself and the world in my designs and also that I can bring beauty and specialness into other people's lives.

Eve: Who is your favorite designer?

Nancy: I like beautiful, functional but feminine clothes. Chloe, Vanessa Bruno, Catherine Malandrino, Thakoon, Philip Lim all appeal to me.

Eve: What is your favorite quote that you live by?

Nancy: I don't have one. But I do like to remind myself every day that my life is fun, effortless and full of creative joy. When things get really tough which they do all the time) or when I have to do things with my business that I don't like (read: sales and bills), actively thinking this and actually speaking it helps me feel more connected to myself, my life and my business.

Eve: What is your favorite piece that you designed? Why?

Nancy: It's funny because my favorite designs are usually the ones that haven't sold well! I love wearing a ruched back bikini that we made out of beautiful stretch burnout stripe from Austria. It's just sexy and fun. Also, there is a lace bralet that we stopped selling two years ago made out of a chantilly stretch lace with lace straps that feels so romantic. I just re-discovered and can't stop wearing it.

Eve: What is the most important piece of advice when trying on/wearing lingerie/bras/swimwear?

Nancy: Make sure that whatever you're wearing fits you well and makes you feel beautiful and special without constricting the physical and energetic flow in your body. This means getting connected to your physical and spiritual self, not always easy but well worth the effort.

History of Bras: Part 3~ Ancient To 1915

Who would think that Lara Croft would be retro? Film and TV have a way of capturing styles, no matter how old, and altering them into a modern fashion statement. It seems that everyone talks about Mary Phelphs-Jacobs patented bra in 1914, but what most people don't realize is that women were wearing bras back in the Cretan times. The bra image (below right) looks like something start out of Tomb Raider or something that a female gladiator would be wearing in Spartacus.

Vogue Reports the First Brassiere 1907

Bra fashion history began as far back as Cretan times, but 1907, was the year when the word brassiere was first reported in an American copy of Vogue. The original French meaning was support, but the word was out of use and the French chose to call a bra soutien-gorge. Cretan women wore bras thousands of years ago. In England bust improvers were available in the Edwardian period. By 1905 BBs as they were known were usual wear. (Right - Reform Bodice Bra)

This is the early supposedly healthier Reform Bodice bra with mesh net cups that gave virtually no support.

Early Brassières Pre~1915

Most of the major designers of the era have tried to lay claim to designing the first bra. Poiret probably had the strongest claim. What is certain, is that all the designers promoted a simple breast retaining garment as better for the newer simple straight dress styles.

In the costume history of bras these early bras were similar to camisoles tops of the 1980s and 1990s. Initially at the turn of the 20^th century even the word camisole was used too, but replaced by 'Bust Bodice' by 1905. (Above Left - Wrap around camisole style bra.)

In her bra history book 'Bras', Rosemary Hawthorne tells of her collection of brassières and of one that is stamped ' Brassiere. Model 441, British Made ', then of another 2-3 years older marked 'LA CYBELE' (No 18 British Made)'. By 1915 the magazine 'The Lady' recorded pretty bust bodices or brassieres as essential wear. Rosemary Hawthorne's bra history book is very informative and she often describes genuine examples of bras, corsets and girdles she has collected or has had donated to her.

"How many of you women are unhappy with your cup size? Do you wish you were a different size? What if I told you you're probably larger than the bra you've been wearing, especially if you have wide set breasts. Would you believe me?

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Gayvin Powers, (aka: Eve), owner and founder of Eve's Apples Lingerie, which specializes in bras for small busted and petite women. Powers shared that 'many women have different individual cup sizes, many women just have wide set breasts and traditional bra measuring doesn't always work.' I asked Gayvin what inspired her to open her lingerie boutique and she mentioned that a 'fitting at Rigby & Peller in London where the Queen gets fitted was my inspiration. They can tell what size you are bare breasted and they don't measure you. I wanted to design lingerie for small breasts but didn't launch due to my trip to London. It was eyeopening to women's bra sizes and made me think further on style and sizes for small busts.' It's very common for 'shallow breasted women to think they're a AA, but many are actually larger. 90% of women that take our online bra fitting have wide set breasts.' I was also intrigued to learn that 'most women are wide set and that many women who are athletes think that they are A cups but are actually larger.' The easiest quick fit for this situation is to "go down a band size and up a bra size."

To measure your bust properly, Gayvin uses band, cup and individual breast measurements along with assessing body type, breast shape, breast placement and current bra issue. When getting fitted at Eve's Apples they 'like to ask what size you currently wear to see if your band or cup size is correct.' When searching for a bra for small busted women it's important to know 'contour bras are not recommended for small busts unless its a petite bra or you have full breast tissue. Nudes are perfect when wearing a white t-shirt. If wearing a one shouldered top - convertible bras are best and give a really a good fit or try a strapless bra.

Now in the February 2011 issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine US (with Mila Kunis on the cover), Eve's Apples' bra expert gives shopping tips on getting your best bra in The A-Cup Revolution by Mina Azodi, Senior Editor at Cosmo. The top four shopping tips for small breasts are:

1. Try a Demi Cup Bra
Demi Cups look great on women who have small busts, especially shallow breast tissue on top of the bust. Most women think they're small busted because they have shallow breast tissue. We love that Mina Azodi highlighted the importance of breast tissue. Mina wrote that, "Small breasts are typically larger on top than on the bottom, so this low scooping style (demi cup) gives just the right amount of support where you need it."

2. Go Tighter
Most women are wearing a band size too big! "Eighty percent of your bra is held in place by the band (not the straps), so it should be a snug fit. A good rule of thumb: You should be able to fit only two fingers between the band and your skin."

3. Eyeball the Underwire
Red Flag: This is SO important because most women are wearing are bra cup that is too small. Most bra consultations I give people have issues with the underwire cutting into the breast tissue, making the bra cup pucker away from the breast, similar to doing a peek-a-boo affect. Most women think that the bra cup is too big. Untrue, the bra cup is too small!

"If you aren't filling out the bra, double-check that the underwire is framing your boobs, not cutting them off. Otherwise, you may need to go up a size for a wider cup."

4. Check Out Your Profile
Turn to your side and raise your arms above your head. If the back of the band moves up, it's too big. It should be even all the way around your torso. Still frustrated on getting a bra that fits like a dream?

Boobs: A Guide To Your Girls by Elisabeth Dale (formerly Squires) is a gem! No, seriously. It's up there with the jewelry I keep on my nightstand. Why?

Elisabeth, the Mammologist, is an expert, being interviewed throughout the country by The New York Times, television and radio stations and blogs. Her book covers all areas from fitting to bras, health, breast types and more. This book has become a welcome asset personally and professionally.

As I've been refining the best way to accurately measure small busted women, Elisabeth's book revealed a wonderful surprise. In it, she mentions Dr. Pechter's method of bra measuring due to individual breast measurement. I've found this method to be so important that I included it on our free online bra consultation form where we provide detailed information, including bra size, breast shape and bra recommendations based upon bra needs and desires.

Why is the individual breast measurement so important?

Most small busted women's measurements won't come up with a bra size when using the traditional method of bra measuring. Personally, I find Dr. Pechter's band measurements still to be too big, however, his system gets in the general area -- much closer than traditional measuring.

Many of you will remember my fateful trip to London where I was finally fitted properly at Rigby & Peller. Its the same establishment that held the Royal Warrant of Corsetieres to the Queen of England and was started by June Kenton. Recently, I discovered, that June Kenton, who gave support to the Queen all these years finally retired.

Did you guys see the story in yesterday's New York Times about the latest trend — small breasts? According to the article, it's cool these days to have tiny tits. As Elisabeth Dale (née Squires), who wrote Boobs: A Guide to Your Girls, told the Times, there has been "a huge surge in Web sites and online retailers that specialize in smaller bra sizes in a very empowering way." (Check out evesappleslingerie.com, for example.) The Times writer goes on to say: "These days, it's not uncommon for women with modest busts to flaunt what little they've got with a deep V-neck cut or a halter top." She also notes that there are a number of Facebook groups peopled by flat-chested and small-breasted women who are proud of their barely-there mammaries.

(Along somewhat similar lines, The Daily Beast recently ran a story about all the celebrities who were so unhappy with the size of their boobs after they got implants that they decided to have them removed.)

I myself have B-cups only on very good days (i.e., days when I stuff some socks down there). These come in handy when I exercise, because they mostly stay put — though I prefer jogging with a sports bra, I could get away with just wearing a tight tank top. But I do often wish I had bigger boobs, because I think they'd make me look better in lots of outfits — particularly dresses and skirts with tight tops.

But the dudes I've dated seemed to think my A-sized boobs were A-okay. One guy said, for instance, "They fit pretty well in one hand — anything bigger would just be wasted."

Is there anything much better than that to be said on the topic? I don't think so.

Nonetheless, I asked a few of my male friends to weigh in on the question: Does size matter when it comes to breasts?

Friend No. 1: BIG BOOBS ARE MOSTLY VISUALLY APPEALING
"I've noticed that the greatest thing about bigger breasts is that they can make a woman look great. They're not bad to touch, either, but I do think the main appeal is aesthetic. That said, an attractive woman with smaller breasts can be hot, too."

Friend No. 2: SMALL TO NONEXISTENT BOOBS ARE BEST IN ALL RESPECTS
"I don't know how to explain this, but I like small to nonexistent breasts best to look at it, and to touch. I don't like big ones at all."

New York Times: For the A-Cup Crowd, Minimal Assets Are a Plus

IT is commonly assumed that small-chested women feel that nature’s lottery has left them coming up short. The parade of heaving bosoms in Victoria’s Secret catalogs not only suggests that bigger is better but also that supersizing with a push-up bra is universally desired.
Wrong, says Ellen Shing, the owner of Lula Lu, a Web site and boutique in San Mateo, Calif., that cater to AAA- to A-cup sizes. She says that while a small number of her customers come in But it’s fueling her sales.

In the last three years, said Elisabeth Dale (formerly Squires), who wrote “Boobs: A Guide to Your Girls,” there has been “a huge surge in Web sites and online retailers that specialize in smaller bra sizes in a very empowering way,” like evesappleslingerie.com. “They are not about ‘Here’s how you stuff your bra,’ ” she added. “They are like, ‘The way you are is perfect, and here’s how I can help you.’ ”

These days, it’s not uncommon for women with modest busts to flaunt what little they’ve got with a deep V-neck cut or a halter top. And more small-chested ladies seem to be openly celebrating their look on Twitter, Facebook and various blogs.

A new blog, smallbustbigheart.com, has become a venue for these women, according to its author, to “gush about the lingerie and clothes that scream, ‘Can you handle me?’ not ‘Am I enough?’ ”

That is not to say handwringing over a Lilliputian bust no longer exists. Some women still find a soulmate in Nora Ephron, whose 1972 essay in Esquire, “A Few Words About Breasts,” perfectly articulated the lament of women who realized they were never going to fill out. Bust magazine, with its feminist streak, has a support group for those laid low by their tiny breasts, and its recent entries are poignant. One woman wrote: “I hate getting outbreasted by teenagers.”

Still, the persistent strain of A-cup pride running through our culture is unmistakable. Facebook groups like Flat Chested and Proud of It! and Flat Chested Girls United exist, and their members trade bon mots as profound as “im flat as a tack :)” — which garner male support like “you are blessed.” For all their entourage to see, more than 2,300 people joined another Facebook group to declare “flat chested girls are prettier!!”

In recent years, as people’s weight has ballooned, breasts (mostly made up of fat) have only gotten larger, and commensurately bra cup sizes, too. K-cups now exist. Brandishing a tiny bosom may be a reaction to that trend.

Unlike many women who struggled as teenagers to make peace with their minimal assets, Sabrina Lightbourn, 37, a photographer in Nassau, the Bahamas, never second-guessed her A-cups, even in a land of bikinis. “In my mind, they are fabulous,” she said. Sometimes, she favors down-to-the-sternum cuts that make it “really obvious that you don’t have much.”

Small-breasted women have also begun to express their anger on the Internet when they suspect one of their brethren has decided to artificially augment what nature has given her. This year, pictures of a bikini-clad Kate Hudson — along with Keira Knightley a symbol of modest-breasted seductiveness to the A-cup population — surfaced showing what looked like modest implants. Afterward, Jen Udan, who works in Internet marketing in Austin, Tex., felt as if she had been slapped in the face. “I don’t need to look up to you, Kate Hudson,” Ms. Udan, 25, wrote in a blog post entitled “Diary of a Mad, Small-Breasted Woman.”

With its motto “Small is Beautiful,” Lula Lu is just one of several retailers and bra makers serving the band of women who make no excuses for their inconspicuous bosoms. Some brands, like the Itty Bitty Bra sold online and in Fred Segal Silk in Santa Monica, Calif., require women to have a sense of humor about being “bust-challenged,” as the Web site jokes. “Some people are taken aback by it, especially the name,” said Jane A. Hodgdon, the designer and owner of the brand, which is sized 32 AA to 38B and retails for $45 to $60. Mrs. Hodgdon, 42 and an AA cup, was tired of bras that “were so heavily padded it just wasn’t me. It looked ridiculous. I’m proud of what I have. I wanted coverage and lift.”

Lailides.com, pronounced LAY-leed, offers come-hither wireless lingerie for $46 to $72 and a healthy dollop of self-love. “Having small breasts and wearing A-cup bras (or AA cup or B cup) is a cause to rejoice,” the site declares. “Women who wear A-cup bras do not experience pain from running or dancing, they can sleep on their stomachs, and best of all, sagging is minimal compared to larger women.” (Their $68 Firebird bra, semi-sheer and scalloped, may make women reconsider underwire altogether.)

This kind of cheerleading is not about girl power. This message of empowerment is resolutely intended for adults who wish their lingerie to reflect their age and station. No woman in her 40s wants to disrobe to reveal a polka-dotted training bra, and unfortunately for too long, grown women have had ill-fitting options or unsexy mood killers in the bra department.

“We are supplying sexy, chic lingerie for grown-up women, not teenagers, who are proud of what they have and not worried about trying to look bigger,” said Fiona Goad, 44, the managing director at LittleWomen.com, an English site with a vast selection whose sales of AAA-cup bras have overtaken AA-cups recently.

Women with flat to small chests disagree about what they want from a bra. One camp consists of traditionalists who take little issue with push-up bras; their complaint is never being able to find one with a small enough band and with cups close enough together to create yelp-worthy cleavage. The Little Bra company, which has 28 to 36 in the A to B range, delivers this kind of instant gratification.

Emily Lau, the chief executive and the designer, said most padded bras look and feel as subtle as “two pillows over a flat board.” Often a push-up bra stands away from the body in an unflatteringly way that makes even the most assured woman wish she had more to “fill” the cup. By contrast, Ms. Lau created her line with contoured-to-the-body padding so that minuscule breasts can be enhanced with no gaps at the bustline.

At the other extreme are the au-naturels who would just as soon go braless if it wasn’t for this little thing called the office and the awkwardness of erect nipples in cold conference rooms. Exquisitely designed soft bras with no underwire appeal to this camp for gorgeous details and “nipple discretion,” as it’s called in the industry, said Susannah Hornsby, an expert bra-fitter at Journelle, a boutique in New York.

In fact, soft bras have come such a long way from their training-bra lineage that Claire Chambers, the chief executive of Journelle, says her saleswomen, most of whom are 32D, regret that they cannot fit into all the crush-worthy fashion pieces from brands like The Lake & Stars. Really.
The middle camp also wants a certain degree of authenticity and their real silhouette to shine under a T-shirt. In their minds, no bra should so transform your breasts that they are unrecognizable. This is tricky, said Ms. Hornsby, who also manages Web operations for Journelle.com, since such a bra has to have a “shallow and stretchy” cup, the between-the-cups spacer as tiny as possible, and a small band. One that fits the bill is Timpa’s $33 Duet Lace Underwire Demi bra, she said.

For too long, bra shopping has demoralized women with just a bit on top. Some department-store saleswomen tell adults to head to the children’s department for training bras. Others are just dismissive. As a size 28A, Heidi Brockmyre, an acupuncturist in San Diego, says she has been turned away from bra-fitting boutiques. “They were like, ‘No, we can’t help you,’ ” she said. “I felt like I’m a freak of nature.”

She has since bought five Little Bra Company bras, and now dabbles in the joys of cleavage — on occasion. “I’m O.K. with not having cleavage,” said Ms. Brockmyre, 33. These bras just make it “more fun to wear tank tops.”

Common Bra Problems Resolved: Cup-Tastrify

One of the biggest bra misconceptions is that small busted women think that because their breasts are little that they must wear a small bra cup size. Not true. There are more women I know who thought that they were a 36A bra only to find out that a 32B or 32C was their correct bra size.

Let’s face it. It’s depressing not finding a bra that fits and laboring under the misconception your bra cup, which keeps gapping, is too big for you. So when you find out that you need a larger cup size, it’s enough to make you to want to throw a parade in your own honor.

MYTH
Small breasts mean that I wear an AA or an A cup.

TRUTH
All small breasts are unique. There are small breasts that fit an AA or A cup AND there are small breasts that fit a B or C cup.

The cup size is dependent upon two factors:

Fullness of Breast Tissue
Width of Individual Breast

Fullness of Breast Tissue dictates how the breast will fill out a bra cup.

Many women with shallow and medium breast tissue think that they have cup sizes smaller than their true size due to the fact that their breast tissue isn’t full. Consequently, many women with shallow breast tissue think that they’re an AA or A cup, only to find out that they’re a B or C cup.

For example, two women wearing the same 32B soft cup bra have different results. One woman has cleavage while the other woman does not. The woman with full breast tissue has more tissue on the top of the breast, allowing for her breasts to create cleavage. Whereas, the woman with shallow breast tissue, due to a slopping affect of tissue on top of breast or deflation from pregnancy, will fill out the bra cup enough for a good fit but not allowing for cleavage. If she wants cleavage, she’ll need a plunge bra, demi cup bra, push up bra or will need to use bra inserts. Both women wear a 32B, but the fullness of their breast tissue fills out the bra differently.

Width of Breast Tissue dictates the cup size that is needed. What is the width? It’s just under the fold of the breast and is where the underwire on the bra fits. How do you know if you need to go up a cup size?

If all of your breast tissue isn’t fitting into the cup, then you need to go up a cup size.
If a bra looks like it fits but your breasts are squished to the center, causing your upper body to look excessively wide with the bra on, then you need to go up a cup size.
If your bra cup is gapping then you need to go up a cup size.
